New York Times Bestselling Author Dana Canedy Kicks Off 31 Days of Glory in Fayetteville/Cumberland County on May 1

The annual month-long military celebration expands to include special events such as a coin ceremony for Children of Fallen Soldiers

Fayetteville, NC – March 23, 2010 – The series of events opens with A Journal for Jordan author Ms. Canedy giving a motivational speech, signing copies of the book, and visiting and connecting with civilians and soldiers and their families at two locations, Fascinate-U Children’s Museum and Fort Bragg’s North Post PX. The book is filled with life lessons that Canedy’s husband, Army First Sergeant Charles Monroe King, wanted to instill in his son in the event he did not return from war. The Pulitzer-Prize winning editor will share her heart-wrenching story with those who truly understand what it’s like to lose a loved one.

31 Days of Glory will honor children of fallen soldiers at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum (ASOM) during a special ceremony where Mayor Anthony Chavonne will present each child with a special coin recognizing them for their courage. Also during the event, winners of the museum’s month-long exhibit, Celebrating & Honoring Military Heroes, will be announced. The display features art from children of military families in Cumberland County Schools.

“Our community is committed to watching over those who watch over us and 31 Days of Glory is just another way for us to honor and recognize the military for bravely protecting our everyday freedoms,” says John Meroski, president and CEO of the Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

With various patriotic and military attractions and events taking place throughout the month, 31 Days of Glory offers lively and fun activities for all ages. Please visit www.31daysofglory.com for a listing of all events, such as:

*Hugh’s Crate, a memorial display honoring Lt. Hugh William Wellons, who was killed in Vietnam in 1966. The exhibit features personal effects he left for his family, and will be shown all month at the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex.

*Visit the Cameo Art House Theatre each Saturday in May for the Military Film Festival featuring such films as Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove, The Great Dictator, and Hurt Locker.

*Join the Fayetteville Downtown Alliance at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum on Saturday, May 15 for the dedication ceremony of its annual Field of Honor. Here, hundreds of American flags will be placed on the museum’s parade grounds and will remain until June 29.

*Visitors can take a hands-on approach to honoring soldiers by making a Blue Star Banner at the Fascinate-U Children’s Museum on Saturday, May 8. The banners are traditionally placed in windows of homes of active duty service members during times of war.

31 Days of Glory reflects the collaboration of 20 community organizations dedicated to supporting the military. Recognized by Peter Greenberg in Newsmax magazine as one of America’s most patriotic communities and by TIME magazine as America’s most pro-military town, Fayetteville/Cumberland County is the ideal place to honor and memorialize those who have put their lives on the line to protect our everyday freedoms.

COAST GUARD AT PORTSMOUTH CELEBRATES MILITARY FAMILIES THROUGH TOY DISTRIBUTIONS

Military families, especially the children, are under a lot of stress. Multiple deployments of one or both parents for extended periods of separation can have a profound impact on our military’s youth. Recognizing the sacrifices that our military family makes to the security of our Nation, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) and the Toy Industry Foundation teamed up with the Coast Guard to host a toy distribution at Coast Guard Base Portsmouth, Virginia.

The toys were a gift from the Toy Industry Foundation’s signature program, The Toy Bank.” Through the “Play Comforts” partnership, the TIF provided these toys from hundreds of generous toy manufacturers to the BGCA for distribution on military bases across the country. According to Jean Butler, the Executive Director of the Toy Industry Foundation, “The Toy Industry Foundation is deeply committed to giving back to our military families who have given so much for our country.” Terrill Wicks, Vice President of Military Services and International projects for the BGCA said, “We appreciate the Toy Industry Foundation’s contributions and commitment to our military families.” Curtis Byrd, Chesapeake District Representative to The Honorable J. Randy Forbes (Fourth District, Virginia) was on hand to thank the military members for their sacrifices and to the BGCA and TIF for helping take care of our military children. Sandy Hardison, the MWR Director at this Coast Guard installation was pleased to be given the opportunity to host the event!

So any day really becomes a good day to distribute toys to military children, but on March 25, 2010, during the National Boys & Girls Club Week and right before April, the month of the military child, over 250 military members and their families from all branches of the Armed Services converged on the Base Portsmouth gymnasium for this toy distribution. The event was planned by Sandy Hardison, MWR Director of the Personnel Services and Support Unit Portsmouth and her team of volunteers who did a superb job of keeping hundreds of wide-eyed, awestruck children occupied as they picked the toys of their choosing from over 1,000 toys available through this generous program.

At the end of the event as the families departed with happy children carrying their toys and after having enjoyed a snack, The Toy Industry Foundation, The Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and the Coast Guard knew that for this brief afternoon, they made a positive impact on the lives of our military children through an event that won’t soon forget.

COAST GUARD AIR STATION BORINQUEN HOSTS WOUNDED WARRIORS

It was almost a year to the day that Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen hosted a group of Wounded Warriors participating in the Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba (SUDS) program. A year later, the command once again jumped at the opportunity to once again participate in this program!

In August 2009, this Coast Guard Air Station played host to six Wounded Warriors from the Marine Corps, Army, and Air Force, from both the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, in Washington, DC, and the Brooke Army Medical Center, in San Antonio, TX. This year, the SUDS co-founder, Daniel Facciola, accompanied by his support team, lead these six Service members in the SUDS program to enjoy Scuba in the warm waters of western Puerto Rico.

SUDS, under the auspices of the Wounded Warrior Project and the Wounded Warrior Disabled Sports Project, at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), is designed to help improve the lives of injured service men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. By training these heroes in a challenging and rewarding activity, SUDS can help facilitate the rehabilitation process and promote mobility. Offering this venue also provides the military member with a sport they can enjoy throughout their life.

During the four days in Puerto Rico, the group enjoyed off shore, open water diving and some much appreciated rest and relaxation. When not actively engaged in diving, the group enjoyed touring the local beaches, boogie boarding, and dinner with new found Coast Guard friends!

Captain Melvin Bouboulis, Commanding Officer of this Coast Guard unit and his Executive Officer, CDR Tony Hahn, have been steadfast supporters of this program and the command’s ability to make a difference in the lives of these returning heroes. As part of their stay, the command hosted a base-wide “Meet and Greet,” where local base residents from all Services and other federal agencies, including their children, could meet and mingle with their guests. A day before the group’s scheduled departure from Puerto Rico, the local All Spouses Club of Borinquen delivered a little piece of “rural Americana” to their new friends by making gift baskets consisting of homemade baked goods, local fruits, mementoes of their visit, and hand crafted “hero” cards, thanks to the assistance of the children! This warm welcome, coupled with the charm of the youth, made it difficult for both participants and hosts alike to keep a “dry eye.”

Once again as Blair Markham, MWR Director at the Coast Guard Air Station and the one instrumental in the command’s involvement with this program tells it, it still remains difficult to determine who got the most from the visit, the guests or the hosts.

National Anthem....
Written by Chaplain Jim Higgins
LSA Anaconda at the Balad Airport in Iraq, north of Baghdad.

For those who are unaware, the National Anthem is played before every movie in military theaters in the U.S. and abroad.

I recently attended a showing of 'Superman 3,' at LSA Anaconda in Iraq.

LSA Anaconda has a large auditorium that is used for movies, as well as memorial
services and other large gatherings. As is the custom back in the States,
we stood and snapped to attention when the National Anthem began before the main feature.

All was going as planned until about three-quarters of the way through
the National Anthem the music stopped. Now, what would happen if this had
occurred with 1,000 18-22 year-olds back in the States? I imagine there
would be hoots, catcalls, laughter, a few rude comments; and everyone
would sit down and call for a movie. Of course, that is, if they had
stood for the National Anthem in the first place.

Here, the 1,000 Soldiers continued to stand at attention, eyes fixed
forward. The music began again. The Soldiers continued to quietly stand
at attention. And again, at the same point, the music stopped.

What would you expect to happen? Even here, I would imagine laughter, as everyone sat down and expected the movie to start.

But you could have heard a pin drop. Every Soldier continued to stand at
attention. Suddenly there was a lone voice, then a dozen, and quickly the
room was filled with the voices of a thousand soldiers, finishing where
the recording left off:

'And the rockets red glare,
The bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night
That our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O'er the land of the free
And the home of the brave'

It was the most inspiring moment I have had here in Iraq. I just wanted
you to know what kind of soldiers are serving you here. Remember them as they fight for you!

Please pass this along as a reminder to others to be ever in prayer for
all our soldiers serving us here at home and abroad.

Proud To Be An American!
God Bless America!

Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club Gets a Little Greener
by Kim Van Treadway

The staff at the golf course works wonders to ensure an enjoyable golf outing from the minute you pull into the parking lot until you drive away with a smile and a great score. They have gone a couple of steps further to ensure your game is good for you and the environment too.

Cheyenne Shadows Golf Club recently completed three major projects that will make your time there more enjoyable and will help Fort Carson reach their sustainability goals. During the last several months the staff at Cheyenne Shadows has been working hard to complete two new buildings that will serve as storm shelters for those storms that seem to come from no where and will also provide new restroom facilities for users of the course. Both facilities were designed for minimal energy and water usage. The work done by ROMTEC, Inc. and Hourglass Construction, Inc. to help us meet our customers needs and our installation's sustainability goals was greatly appreciated.

The staff also completed the full upgrade of all the cart paths on the course. These cart paths will ensure better mileage for our new carts, eliminate the soil erosion that was happening along the old paths and they were completed using all the asphalt from the old cart paths. We estimate that we were able to recycle 2590 tons of asphalt in this project. That's right; you can recycle just about anything these days. If you are interested in more information on this process you can call Rocky Mountain Materials & Asphalt, Inc.

Another major project that has been completed recently is the upgrade of the non-potable water irrigation system. We have used gray water on the course for some time but now we are doing it with maximum efficiency thanks to Niebur Golf, Inc. We have upgraded all of the water control computers and system interfaces, the lines as well as the sprinkler heads themselves. Additionally, this new irrigation system has an on site weather station that provides the staff current weather conditions in real time. This weather station monitors wind speed, solar radiation and air temperature in order to calculate the water used by the plants or evaporating on a daily basis; the staff can then water accordingly. Our best estimate is that we will save approximately 20% of gray water every year and that means we won't have to dip into the potable water of the installation.

The next time you are at the golf course stop and say congratulations to Frank Jacobson and Greg Willis for their hard work and forward thinking. Their willingness to work these projects from start to finish ensured that all aspects of Fort Carson's sustainability goals were met and we would be better able to service the Soldiers and Family members of Fort Carson. We are proud of our staff and their course, they are exactly what the Directorate of Family & Morale, Welfare & Recreation, the Garrison at Fort Carson and the U.S. Army need to ensure our future needs are met by our actions today.

Chairman Recognizes National Military Appreciation Month

WASHINGTON - America's gratitude inspires the members of its armed forces, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a message he issued to commemorate May as National Military Appreciation Month.

Here is Navy Adm. Mike Mullen's message:

"Despite the challenges of two wars and numerous other engagements around the globe, America's military is stronger than ever. Our military is strong because our Nation stands behind them. Whether they are your neighbors, friends, or family members, all make life-changing sacrifices, and all are worthy of our eternal thanks.

"Gratitude from an appreciative Nation – not just during this month, but always – inspires courage and peace of mind for those whose charge it is to keep the peace. Remembering those who sacrificed everything – as well as their families – and continuing to thank and support our veterans and wounded warriors is crucial to the health of our Armed Forces, and truly, essential to the health of our Nation.

"Throughout this month of May, please take time to thank all those in each Service branch, the National Guard, and Reserves, as well as Defense civilians, retirees, veterans, and their families. They are making a difference – and so can you.

"The Joint Chiefs and I are proud to salute the men, women and families of America's Armed Forces – this month, as well as every day of the year."

Sincerely,

MCCS and Sodexo partner to improve youth sports

HQMC (MR) Quantico, VA – On Friday, April 24, 2009, officials from Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) and Sodexo Government Services met to kick off a year-long youth sports sponsorship program.

Timothy R. Larsen, Director Personal and Family Readiness Division (MajGen USMC Ret.), and Terrill Wicks, Section Head Children, Youth and Teen Program, accepted a commercial sponsorship check for $61,500 from Greg Verone, Sodexo’s President of Government Services, and David Bennett, Senior Vice President for Defense East.

“Sodexo has a wealth of expertise in health and wellness which is an integral part of our corporate citizenship commitments,” said Verone. “We are honored to sponsor this project because we have a strong commitment to help improve the quality of life for the families of those who serve our nation.”

Under the sponsorship agreement, the money will be used to improve youth sports activities at installations world-wide. Sodexo has also agreed to provide an end of season pizza party for sports participants at 11 installations in the continental United States. Sodexo has been involved with the Marine Corps Marathon’s Healthy Kids Fun Run since 2004, but this is their first sponsorship that will touch military children at the installation level.

“It was only fitting that this year long sponsorship, which will benefit children across the Marine Corps, start in April, the Month of the Military Child,” said Wicks. “This 23rd annual celebration honors the “young” heroes of the military, today’s military children who make significant sacrifices, yet proudly support their parents.”

The MCCS Youth Sports program provides year round activities such as football, soccer, baseball, and basketball for boys and girls ages 6 – 18 years old. These programs help youth and teens achieve and maintain fitness, acquire a broad range of physical skills, develop a sense of teamwork, cooperation and fairness that lead to healthy, active lifestyles.

For more information about youth sports or other activities contact your installation Childcare Resource and Referral Office. For more information about the MCCS corporate sponsorship program please contact the Sponsorship Coordinator at (703) 784-3894 or email: mccssponsorship@usmc-mccs.org.

COAST GUARD HOSTS INTERNATIONAL MILITARY SPORTS MEETING

Several years of planning came to fruition in February 2009, when the United States hosted the Conseil International du Sport Militaire (CISM), North and South Continental Planning meeting at Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, in Puerto Rico.

CISM is an international military sports organization, headquartered in Brussels, Belgium, that has over 130-member nations. CISM’s motto, “Friendship Through Sports,” is manifested through the organization of military sporting events held in different regions of the world. Every four years, these tiered sports competitions culminate in the Military World Games. The last games were held in Hyberabad, India where over 5,000 athletes from over 100 nations competed in sporting events, making the Military World Games, the second largest sporting event next to the Olympics! The next Games will be hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro, in 2011.

Several years ago, the CISM member nations on the North and South American continents asked the Armed Forces Sports Council Secretariat, the office responsible to coordinate United States involvement in international military sports competition, if the United States would be willing to host the 2009 Continental meeting in the Caribbean, making it easy for most nations to attend as cost was a factor. With a prime location in Puerto Rico, the Coast Guard volunteered to host the event and with the approval of the Armed Forces Sports Council, a group comprised of the MWR/Services chiefs from all five military Services responsible under OSD policy in overseeing US military sports involvement, plans were underway to host the first-ever US-based Continental meeting!

Invitations went out to the 16 CISM member nations on the North and South American continents. At the end, over 20 delegates from 9 countries would participate in these meetings including delegated from the United States, Canada, Brazil, Barbados, Chile, Ecuador, Jamaica, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Additionally, BG Gianni Gola, CISM President from Italy, and Colonel Walter Van Velthoven, CISM Treasurer General from Belgium, travelled from Europe to participate in these meetings. BG Gola would go on to leave from these meetings to brief SOUTHCOM staff in Florida regarding the missions of CISM and their impacts on friendship through sports.

This was the first time that the Continental meeting was hosted on United States soil. Under the guidance of the United States Sports Council Secretariat, Mr. Suba Saty, LT Paul Coleman, MWR Officer at Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, and Mr. Blair Markham, the MWR Director, coordinated, planned, and executed a rigorous week-long agenda that included CISM meetings and other events that exposed the attendees to the United States Coast Guard and the culture of Puerto Rico, including trips to local beaches and shopping malls! CAPT Melvin Bouboulis, the Air Station’s Commanding Officer, hosted a welcoming party for all of his visitors with the officers and senior enlisted personnel attached to the command. This event featured authentic, live Puerto Rican music and food and drink made possible through a commercial sponsorship with Anheuser-Busch. During the week, the CISM attendees were also provided a tour and brief of the Air Station’s flight area, including an opportunity to see a Coast Guard rescue helicopter, “up close and personal,” and they had an opportunity to talk with the pilots and air crews, including the rescue swimmers, who fly these aircraft in support of Coast Guard missions in the area.

The week culminated in the traditional CISM closing ceremonies presided over by the unit’s commanding officer. After that, the CISM delegates were treated to a Coast Guard search and rescue demonstration at the beach adjacent to the Air Station.

By all accounts, the CISM meetings were highly successful. CISM delegates were able to not only conduct their business in the planning of future international military sporting events in the region, but also further the CISM motto of “friendship through sports.” But in addition to that, the United States through the Armed Forces Sports Council and the United States Coast Guard was able to treat our foreign visitors to American and Puerto Rican hospitality, further demonstrated the power of the armed forces sports program in promoting friendship through the world.

2009 SPIRIT OF AMERICA TOUR KICK-OFF LUNCHEON

Entertainment is an integral part of the military’s morale, well-being, and recreation program and on February 19, 2009, members of the Nashville-based entertainment industry, representatives of the Armed Forces, and the Spirit of America Tour converged on Nashville, TN for the 2009 Spirit of America Tour kick-off luncheon.

Since its inception in 2002, just seven years ago, as an effort to boost morale of the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families, The Spirit of America Tour, sponsored by the Robert and Nina Rosenthal Foundation, Inc., a California based nonprofit organization, has arranged for over 100 concerts at America’s domestic military installations. Robert Rosenthal, a retired attorney, created the Spirit of America Tour after 9-11 to do something for America. Rosenthal chose the Armed Forces as they are the unsung heroes of our defense and the true champions of the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted.

To hold these concerts, the Spirit of America Tour urges headline entertainers to volunteer their services and appear at military installations. Although the artist volunteers his or her time, the Spirit of America Tour pays most expenses incurred by the entertainer in making the appearance. Entertainers like Charlie Daniels, Clint Black, Patty Loveless, Dierks Bentley, Howie Mandel, Pam Tillis, Dennis Miller, Neal McCoy, and Aaron Tippin, to name a few, have given concerts at military installations as part of the Spirit of America Tour.

The honored guest at this year’s luncheon was Gen James T. Conway, Commandant, US Marine Corps who stressed the importance of entertainment to our men and women in uniform and their families.

During the luncheon, representatives of the Armed Services and the Spirit of America Tour staff gathered for a photo opportunity.

From left to right, the photo included, Captain Ed Eng, Chief, Coast Guard Exchange & MWR; Captain Mark Ginda, Commanding Officer, Naval Submarine Base Groton, CT; Mr. Robert M. Rosenthal, President, Spirit of America Tour; Gen James T. Conway, Commandant, US Marine Corps; Mr. Rich Gorman, Chief Operating Officer for the US Army’s Family & Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Command; Command Sergeant Major Abe Vega, Family & MWRC; and Sergeant Major Carlton W. Kent, Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps.

Rosenthal plans on staging at least 15 concerts at military installations in 2009.

Shades of Green, Disney partner to make vacations affordable for military

Jan. 6, 2009
Contact: William Bradner

Shades of Green is a resort hotel, located on Walt Disney World Resort, exclusive to service members, retirees, DoD civilians, and their Family members. It is a safe haven for military Families, whether they’re reintegrating after an overseas deployment, having one last “Family fling” before mom or dad deploys, or simply getting away for a weekend.
“If I suddenly break down and cry in a Holiday Inn, everyone’s going to be looking at me funny,” one guest recently explained. “Here, if it suddenly dawns me he’s leaving in a week and I start to cry, I’ve got ten people asking how they can help and offering support.”

The resort manager, Brian Japak, is a retired Soldier, and his son has already survived two attacks involving improvised explosive devices while serving in Iraq.

“I have great empathy for the Families that we serve here,” he said.

According to Japak, every effort is made to ensure the guests are pampered—well—Disney style, with just a touch of “home,” like the tax-free AAFES shoppette and the Mickey Mouse statue all decked out in red, white and blue. Security at the hotel complies with standard base force protection regulations, ensuring the Soldiers and Families can sleep soundly and not worry about their personal safety.

Shades of Green is and Armed Forces Recreation Center, run by the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command based in Alexandria, Va. FMWRC’s mission is to provide Soldiers and their Families with the same quality of life they are sworn to protect. Rates are set on a sliding scale, based on rank, and with no shareholders to answer to or profits to be made, the rates are kept remarkably low.

Beginning this month, Disney is chipping in to make vacations for service members and their Families even more affordable.

With the “Disney’s Armed Forces Salute” offer, active and retired U.S. military personnel, including active members of the United States Coast Guard and activated members of the National Guard or Reservists, can enjoy complimentary, multi-day admission into Disney’s U.S. theme parks, and additional special ticket offers for family members and friends.

Patriot Club, Dragon Hill Lodge, Lagenbruck Center Win Catering Awards

Written by William Bradner
Deputy Public Affairs Officer

Army Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Command officials have announced the winners of the 2008 Catering Awards, to be presented Feb. 22, 2009, at the Catersource/Event Solution Conference in Las Vegas.

The Best MWR Catered Event award (prepared for a client) will be presented to the Fort Sill Patriot Club for support to the International Artillery Symposium on Aug. 4-7, 2007. The Best MWR Special Event (hosted by MWR to generate revenue)award will be presented to the team at the Dragon Hill Lodge in Yongsan, Korea, for their Oktoberfest celebration.

In a new category added in 2008, the award for the Best Implementation of a Family and MWR Command event will be presented to the Lagenbruck Center in Grafenwoehr, Germany, for their implementation of the FMWRC Bunco promotion.
"The past two years we've placed an even greater emphasis on our military catering program," said Rich Gorman, Chief Operations Officer for the Family and MWR Command. He applauded the award initiative as an excellent opportunity to recognize catering and event programming— a critical part of the financial success of MWR Operations.

"Catering personnel have attended the world-class Catersource Conference, where they've been inspired by industry leaders who demonstrate what's hip and creative while reinforcing bottom-line goals," Gorman said. "We've introduced the Army 5-Star Catering Program, we've quadrupled the number of entries in this competition, and our catering revenues have grown into a $30 million a year business."

Forty-six entries were reviewed, and the winners selected by a panel of event, catering and marketing professionals at the Family & MWR Command (FMWRC). According to Gorman, all the entries were first class events that demonstrated innovative programs and creative catering capabilities offered to Soldiers and their Families.

Judges were impressed with the Fort Sill entry by the logistics required to host senior leaders from the Middle East, including: education on proper menu and protocol issues; providing menus in English and Arabic; carpeted rooms set aside to meet prayer needs; multiple events including in-club and off-site events; impressive food displays; formal and casual functions; and appropriate entertainment.

The Dragon Hill event was an authentic celebration for 54,000 Active Duty service members, Family members and civilians in Korea, that included German music, schnitzels and sauerbraten, pretzels and strudels, brotchen and bratwurst hot off the grill. Held under a large blue & white striped tent erected on the upper level of the parking garage. The four-night event generated $25,607 in net profit.

Judges were impressed with not only the event itself, but the wide range of fall activities that made up the celebration. The staff executed the pre-event details to make sure word got out; with the hotel staff "dressed for the event" and Bavarian music playing over the hotel sound system, it was hard not to notice the festival. The four-day event also included: a 5-kilometer Volksmarch; a community yard sale; a community Fall Festival Parade; and a Classic Car Show.

Marketing was extensive, from an "Oktoberfest Tease" booth selling Oktoberfest food and beverages with an Oktoberfest backdrop in front of the hotel to mailers sent to all the Embassies in Seoul, along with in-house lobby displays and an in-house video.

The new category was added in 2008 to recognize the installation with the most creative and effective implementation of an FMWRC-sponsored special event or promotion. The Langenbruck Center in Grafenwoehr, Germany walked away with the award by building on the "It's Bunco Time" promotion that ran in April, May and June of 2008.

The Grafenwoehr MWR staff hosted monthly Bunco events to bring people into a facility that was struggling financially because 50 percent of its patrons were deployed. Each month the number of Bunco players and the club's revenues increased. In July, they offered "Vegas Night," complete with an Elvis impersonator. In August they hosted "Vacation Night" and transformed the sports bar into a paradise getaway. "Halloween Bunco" in October featured the staff in costumes and the island paradise transformed into a haunted house.

The judges were impressed with the community partnerships demonstrated: from CYS providing free child care to the donated themed décor, buffets and centerpieces. Prizes were bowling coupons, Java Café mugs and coupons, gift cards from ITR vendors and Army Recreation Machine Program (ARMP) Multi-player online games (MPOG) cards.

Two winners from each of the winning installations will receive a funded trip to the Catersource/Event Solutions Conference in Feb. in Las Vegas, where they will be officially recognized and have the opportunity to brief other Army catering managers about their events.

The winning packages are listed online at www.mwrpromotions.org.
